Our Projects
The Burlington Arboretum, developed in partnership with the City of Burlington, is our largest project to date.

New Leaf Circle
New Leaf Circle on Boone Station Drive was created by NLS in 2013, in consultation with Sculpture in the Landscape. The roundabout height was raised, a masonry wall was added, and a tricycle-shaped sculpture—"Chasing the Wind” by Jeff Hackney—was installed. The landscape design features a tricycle appearing to have left a trail of flowers behind as it meandered up the hill. In 2023, NLS renovated the plantings, replacing the existing annuals with longer-lasting perennials. The sculpture is lit at night for a dramatic effect. NLS and the City of Burlington contract with Living Landscapes to maintain the space. Over time, NLS has invested more than $40,000 at this site.
W Webb Ave Railroad Overpass
New Leaf Society partnered with North Carolina Railroad and Norfolk Southern in 2015 to enhance the West Webb Avenue overpass area in the Glen Raven community. The project involved cleaning all steel surfaces, applying highly resilient primer, and painting concrete abutments and wing walls for preservation, with an investment of $920,000 from NCRR and Norfolk Southern.
NLS made an initial investment of $32,000 to frame the bridge with fresh landscaping, including more than 170 Carissa hollies chosen for both aesthetic value and erosion control. The landscape contractor is Living Landscapes, and ongoing maintenance is supported by NLS.
