In 2023, the City of Graham removed more than 200 declining trees from the woods around the walking trail at Cooke Park. NLS worked with City staff to create a list of several native tree species that would make suitable replacements. NLS purchased 84 new plants for the project, and Recreation & Parks staff installed the plant material and continues maintenance of the site. The plant list included Tulip poplar (5), red maple (3), Forest Pansy redbud (10), Cornus Florida dogwood (10), American Sycamore (5), American Hornbeam (3), River Birch (3), American Linden (3), Brackens Brown Beauty Magnolia (3), American Yellowwood (1), Legacy Sugar Maple (3), Swamp Chestnut Oak (2), Persimmon (2), Pignut Hickory (2), Red Buckeye (5), Sawtooth Oak (3), Overcup Oak (2), Bur Oak (2), American Beech (4), American Holly (3), and Mountain Laurel (10).
